Winter Solstice

I’ve always heard winter solstice referred to as “the shortest day of the year.” Today, I heard someone call this “the longest night of the year.” Same concept, but the latter sounds so much better: positive and even a little mysterious. Instead of lamenting the the lack of daylight, we are celebrating the wintertime darkness.

One thing I have been celebrating as the days have grown shorter is that the  sunsets on the Central Coast are suddenly more spectacular.  I’m not sure if this is an atmospheric phenomenon or simply a function of me actually noticing them, since sunset times now line up exactly with my five minute oceanside drive along Highway 101 to pick up my daughter each evening and our subsequent walks along the ocean cliffs. Here’s a picture of a recent one.
